Statistics from Zhongqinglian show that in 2023, the national bicycle production reached 27.8 million units, with 13.08 million units produced in Tianjin, accounting for 47%; the national electric bicycle production reached 42.28 million units, with 15.78 million units from Tianjin, accounting for 37%. The recently released "Tianjin Light Industry Transformation and Upgrade Action Plan (2024-2027)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Action Plan") points out the direction for the future development of the city's bicycle and electric bicycle industry. Tianjin will strive to expand and strengthen its complete vehicle enterprises, improve the application level of new materials such as carbon fiber and titanium alloy, strengthen the advantages in frames and painting processes, make up for the shortcomings in electronic control, motors, and batteries, and establish an advantageous and complementary, collaborative bicycle and electric bicycle advanced manufacturing cluster that integrates R&D design, new materials, parts production, and complete vehicle assembly.

As a leading industry in the city's light industry, Tianjin's bicycle and electric bicycle industry has been vigorously promoting product innovation, technological innovation, and marketing innovation in recent years, focusing on improving key technologies such as industrial design, material application, and process production, deepening new product research and development, and increasing the supply of mid-to-high-end consumer goods. Last year, the bicycle manufacturing industry achieved an output value of 11.42 billion yuan, accounting for 0.5% of the total output value of above-scale industries; the electric bicycle manufacturing industry achieved an output value of 24.69 billion yuan, accounting for 1.1% of the total output value of above-scale industries.

The Action Plan points out that Tianjin's bicycle and electric bicycle industry will focus on fashion leisure, sports fitness, racing bicycles, long-distance off-road, folding portable, and intelligent power-assisted models, adhering to the product innovation concept of "light weight, fine workmanship, clever design, and high quality." It will develop high-end power-assisted bicycles and continuously improve the supply capacity of mid-to-high-end products. It will improve the manufacturing level of new processes such as metal processing and forming, high-precision forging, and non-metallic material automated processing and forming, promote equipment upgrades and transformations such as computer cutting, unmanned welding and painting, and ultrasonic non-destructive testing, add activated carbon adsorption and catalytic combustion equipment, and achieve full digitalization and clean and green transformation of production. It will enhance the service functions of specialty stores, cultivate the domestic market, and expand cross-border e-commerce. Relying on events and competitions, it will increase the promotion of "green and low-carbon travel," carry out "cycling + fitness," "cycling + tourism," and "cycling + culture" activities, cultivate new consumption scenarios, and enhance brand competitiveness.

Surrounding the development of the bicycle and electric bicycle industry, Tianjin will optimize the development ecosystem, cultivate high-quality enterprises in stages, cultivate a group of high-end brands with good growth potential and leading technology and consumption trends, expand and strengthen the "Bicycle Industry Capital" in Jinghai District and the "China Bicycle and Electric Bicycle Industry Base" in Wuqing District, and continuously promote the completion of supporting facilities, forming industrial chains and clusters.
